Youth Day: Celebrating Morocco’s Future Through Its Youth

Every August 21st, Morocco celebrates Youth Day, an official public holiday that coincides with the birthday of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, born on August 21, 1963. Rooted in the national calendar for nearly seven decades, this date honors Moroccan youth and their role in building the Kingdom.

A Tradition Born with Independence

The origins of this celebration date back to 1956, shortly after Morocco regained its independence. Established under the reign of the late King Mohammed V, Youth Day was initially linked to the birthday of the then Crown Prince, Moulay Hassan, later King Hassan II, who was considered the Kingdom’s first representative of youth. In a country that needed to rebuild itself and assert its identity after decades under protectorate rule, honoring youth was a way of declaring that the nation’s future rested on the energy of its new generations.

Under the reign of King Hassan II, the celebration took on a more symbolic dimension, becoming a privileged moment to encourage youth initiatives and highlight their role in the evolution of Moroccan society. Since King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne in 1999, the holiday has been linked to the current Sovereign’s birthday, while retaining its original purpose: honoring the youth.

Youth at the Heart of National Priorities

For more than two decades, King Mohammed VI has continuously launched initiatives to support the development of Moroccan youth, whether in education, vocational training, or economic and social integration. The launch of the National Initiative for Human Development in 2005, along with numerous programs supporting youth employment and entrepreneurship, illustrates this ongoing commitment to a generation regarded as the cornerstone of the Kingdom’s development.

Each year, Youth Day is an occasion to highlight the achievements of young Moroccans in various fields: sports, culture, science, the arts, and entrepreneurship. Cultural events, the inauguration of sports facilities and youth centers, as well as educational activities, mark this day throughout the country.

A Renewed Pact of Trust Each Year

More than a simple commemoration, Youth Day symbolizes a genuine social pact between the State and its youth, built on trust and collective ambition. It serves as a reminder that Moroccan youth are not merely a demographic force, but a strategic pillar of the country’s development, called upon to carry forward the great economic, social, and cultural projects of tomorrow.

For the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services of Laâyoune, this day holds particular significance, as the economic future of our southern provinces depends on the dynamism, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit of local young talent. By celebrating Youth Day, Morocco reaffirms, year after year, a forward-looking vision for society, placing its youth at the heart of its collective ambition.
